What is Citizen 32?

Citizen32 is a radical poetry and arts magazine with a global view which aims to showcase the work of new and emerging talent alongside established writers such as Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Harold Pinter, Adrian Mitchell, Simon Armitage, Roger McGough, John Cooper Clarke, Saadi Youseff, Attila the Stockbroker and George Wallace.

The idea for the magazine arose from reaction to the lack of arts magazines that address current events. We wanted to produce a print magazine that would provide an outlet for writers and artists more political work – not a mere sloganeering opportunity but a collection point for quality pieces infused with passion and thought.

Magazines have been themed on War and Peace, Homelessness, Sexuality, and Censorship. Our latest magazine, on the theme of Class was launched on May Day at an event backed by Manchester Trades Council and the Manchester Branch of the National Union of Journalists.

We aspire to the highest possible standards to bring quality poetry and art to as wide an audience as possible as well as to nurture and encourage the literary talents from new writers. We have had contributions from a wide range of sources and we aim to continue unearthing new talent.

There are few publications which pay poets but we pay all contributors to the magazine, since we believe firmly that creative workers should be rewarded for their labour with more than just recognition. We agree with the views of our great friend, Adrian Mitchell who attempted to establish a trade union for poets.

We are an independent publication. We are not part of a major media group and for that reason we can only distribute the magazine to independent bookshops, bookfairs, events such as the Tolpuddle Martyrs festival as well as through subscription.

We welcome contributions from anyone who has something to say. Check out our submissions guidelines for how you can contirbute
