Colombian trades unionists face death threats

The Justice for Colombia campaign is calling for urgent help to defend union leaders facing assassination threats

A series of incidents involving leaders of the Colombian agricultural workers' trade union FENSUAGRO, as well as their children, indicate that assassination attempts against them are imminent. The two individuals believed to be at most risk – Aidee Moreno and Eberto Diaz – have both visited the UK to speak at union conferences and other events.

“Left’s Glastonbury” unearths talent

Around a dozen poets showed off their talents at the Citizen 32 poetry slot at this year's Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival.

The open mic spot gave new performers a chance to show what they were made of and were well received.

The brilliant Elvis McGonnagal, who featured in the magazine's "Class" issue, also performed at the festival which brought together trades unionists, political groups and environmental activists.

Our Flesh of Flames launched

Artist Theodore A Harris; radical poet Amiri Baraka, and writer M.K. Asante Jr have collaborated to produce a book which strikes at the heart of American imperialism – Our Flesh of Flames. Harris’s vivid and striking collages are captioned by poet Amiri Baraka, declaring the ugly truth of America’s legacy of slavery, racism and imperialism.

Poets sign up for the "left's Glastonbury"

Citizen 32 is hosting a poetry slot at this year's Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival next Saturday (July 19th).

Poet/activists can take part in the open mic event between 11am and 1pm. Anyone interested in taking part can email editor.citizen32@ntlworld.com or speak to Citizen 32 co-editor Dave Toomer and sign up on the day.

The brilliant Elvis Mcgonnagal, who featured in the magazine's "class" issue, will be performing at the festival on Sunday July 20th.

The Race issue is out now and features some of the best poets in the UK, USA and throughout the world.

British black poets, Benjamin Zephaniah and Lemn Sissay share their views on race, racism and their poetic roots and have provided us with some excellent examples of their work.

And from across the Atlantic, we publish the work of beat legends Amiri Baraka and Diane di Prima as well as the artwork of acclaimed collagist Theodore A Harris

Virtually unheard of in the UK, Baraka has been a massive influence on black writers in the USA and has had to fight relentless attacks from the establishment, particularly in the wake of his post 9/11 poem Somebody Blew Up America.

Di Prima is an anarchist, a revolutionary and is the most important female beat poet. She has recently published a new updated version of her acclaimed collection, Revolutionary Letters.
